Presentation:
For the most part, Draco presents himself as what he believes to be: an entitled, superior individual who is better than everyone for two reasons: he's a Malfoy and he's a pureblood. He has had an incredibly prejudiced sort of upbringing that plays heavily into why he acts the way he does. He would much rather show himself off as an elitist prick who treats everyone around him as garbage than for a moment admit that maybe his family's beliefs might be in the wrong. He comes off to most people as a selfish bully, and it isn't too far off the mark; in order to make himself feel even better about himself, despite his rather cushy childhood and lifestyle, he puts down everyone around him. He has an incredible tendency to snap at people, usually managing to turn something as simple as their name into a put-down.

He's also remarkably clever, which he never fails to show off; in Draco's world, his intelligence and cleverness are both things that he ought to flaunt just as much as his pureblooded status. It all comes down to pride and his own selfish needs: if something involves putting himself aside for even a moment, he won't do it, just as surely as he will always refuse to ask for help when he needs it most. Rather than letting himself appear as human to everyone around him, he would prefer to bottle his emotions inside and appear as almost god-like, or so he would like to think. Completely by his own choice, Draco strives to be absolutely unapproachable, and generally surrounds himself with bulky henchmen types in order to better achieve that end.

However, though he generally recognises when someone is legitimately better at something than him, he always makes a point of putting them down in that specific regard, like it has the chance of lessening how much better they are than him. He acts incredibly superior to people, like they're nothing more than stepping stones on his way up to the top; as such, he generally has a sneer on his face to outwardly show just how much disdain he has for his surroundings. He seems to most people to have two default settings: spiteful and smug. That is to say, he'll be smug until the moment he realises he's been talked into a corner, and then the sneer returns.

Motivations:
As described earlier, Draco has had an incredibly prejudiced upbringing: as the only son of two pureblooded parents, he has been taught to strive for the same greatness that his family has achieved. At this point in his life, he is also a Death Eater, one of the Dark Lord Voldemort's followers, though not willingly; after his father was imprisoned in Azkaban, he was made to take his place at Voldemort's side. He is not a true leader, no matter what his years with Crabbe and Goyle back at Hogwarts may suggest: Draco simply does not have the drive or courage to be able to lead anyone in any sort of situation. He is a follower and a coward, more likely to run at the first sign of danger than to stick around.

The idea of his incessant bullying of everyone around him is easily explained: he lets out pent up emotion by taking it out on others, as well as relieving his personal insecurities. Well aware that others are better than him, but unwilling to admit it to himself, Draco belittles those he believes to have superior skills in any way, as a way to ruin their self-esteem in hopes that he will be able to take their place back at the top of things. In this, he doesn't have to acknowledge that he has just as many feelings as everyone else, that he actually is human, and that his life may not be as perfect as he leads everyone else to believe.

All that said, he is an incredibly loyal person, though only to the right people. His family takes precedence over everyone else, his mother being his absolute highest priority; Having been forced into becoming a Death Eater has taken its recent toll on Draco; his focus is shifted a little from his typical bullying tendencies, and more onto simply completing his mission and protecting his family. All things considered, it's obvious from the get-go that the only drive he has behind anything he's done in this, his sixth year at Hogwarts, is to keep his family safe and proud of him. If a threat comes up that threatens only him, it won't be nearly as effective as a threat towards his mother. Similarly, the fastest way to get him to snap is to attack his family. At this point, he's starting to realise that things may not be quite the way he had always believed them to be, but there's nothing he can do about it. No matter how much he realises, Draco believes himself to be almost completely powerless, like nothing more than an insignificant and expendable speck.

Another driving force in him is the idea that his failure will translate to the failure of the entire family; regardless of the fact that he's nothing more than a terrified little boy, Draco presses on under the reassurance that everything will eventually be all right if he just goes through with it and comes out the other end of the tunnel. Even in the case of the Arena, his only goal is to survive long enough to make sure his family is all right. As he doesn't generally tend to make friends or care what anyone around him thinks of him, there's very little chance of him treating anyone with any respect at all.

Draco doesn't tend to trust anyone, no matter how he comes off in a first impression. He might be the most charming young man in the world at first, but chances are that's more because he can see you benefitting him in some way rather than because he likes you in any way. In fact, more likely than not, he doesn't like you. In a sense, Draco tends to see having friends proper as a weakness, a thought passed down from his father; he prefers allies with skills that he doesn't himself have or henchmen to creating actual relationships with people. As he fears being made expendable, he makes others around him expendable: even though he's kept Crabbe and Goyle around him for six years, he treats them as lackeys for pure brute strength or other menial tasks, while he takes the helm.

As a rather intelligent young man, it's possible that another motivation for Draco's bullying stems from the fact that his family has pushed him to always be number one. It's one of the few things he truly agrees with, and a major personality trait: he is incredibly ambitious, and knows that he has the capability to be the best at everything he tries. However, his upbringing has led him to believe that if he can't do it without cheating or putting others down, then that's a completely viable route to take. He doesn't bat an eye at buying his way onto a team, or stepping on everyone to climb his way to the top.

His intelligence also plays into a general curiosity: if he feels like he's missing out on something good, he will always try to put himself into the middle of it. However, at the same time, both pride and his Slytherin tendency to choose flight over fight override certain instances of this. In the case of danger, he will feel a sort of morbid curiosity that often gets overridden until he's at an appropriately safe distance from the aforementioned danger; until that moment, his fear of virtually everything takes over and puts him effectively into a panic that can rarely be sated easily.

All in all, Draco Malfoy is a misguided individual who, though essentially good at heart, has made all the wrong choices.

SAMPLES
Thread: Here. Post-war!Draco is having a particularly bad day (Bete Noire).

(Please let me know if you would like me to write an additional network sample due to the nature of the changed canon points between the application and the sample.)

Prose:
Whomever had the brilliant idea to kidnap him was going to find themselves on the wrong end of his wand as soon as he was given it back. As if that wasn't bad enough, he'd been unceremoniously shoved into an ill-fitting outfit that he couldn't imagine looking good on anyone, and then shoved into a large room filled with Muggle weapons. And they expected him to use them.

    Right.

At least, Draco thought to himself wryly as he stomped loudly across the room to one of the racks of weapons, tentatively picking up a knife between thumb and index finger, the so-called Gamemakers weren't even looking at him. Like he was nothing. He'd show them nothing. Another glance upwards told him at least one was glancing over to him periodically, trying to see if he was actually going to do anything, and he felt a sneer tug at his lip already, sitting there like a familiar friend. He held the knife by the hilt, in a similar fashion to one might wield a sword, and tentatively tried to aim at one of the targets near him; throwing it saw him little advantage, since though his aim might have been decent in some regard, the poor form killed any chance he might have had at hitting the target. The knife fell tragically short, clattering across the floor to break the silence of the training room. Draco's breath came in annoyed huffs at that point as he stared down the room at the knife, like he was willing it to just up and stab the target of its own volition.

It didn't move. He wasn't surprised.

The fingers of his right hand twitched, lamenting the loss of his wand for the time being. Grey eyes scanned the room for something he might be better at. So he circled the room, trying everything: archery was a bust, as was anything involving throwing. He managed to do decently at the so-called camouflage station, wherein he internally lamented the tendency of Muggles to actually need to do things for themselves, rather than just having Transfiguration. It would have made it so much easier, he decided as he leaned against a pole, managing somehow to blend in for a short while. He closed his eyes, still thinking to himself about just how Muggles managed to do this sort of thing all the time, and the next time he opened his eyes, it was to a loud buzzer sounding the end of his time. Like he really knew there was a time limit to begin with. Like he knew any of this.

The Gamemakers still weren't looking at him.

What is your character scored: While Draco has the opportunity to score higher, if he were to put his mind to it, his tendency to lean towards running and hiding in virtually every situation scores him much lower. He has very few skills outside of his magic to rely on; without it, he's a bit of a wreck, in fact. He has the capability to throw a punch every now and then, but he would rather not, instead hoping that other people will do his dirty work for him, as they've done for years. He does have speed on his side: years of Quidditch and running have made him an excellent runner, meaning he does have a good chance at fleeing and keeping away from people if need be. He also has a talent in climbing, allowing him to better get away from his enemies. His intellect also could play a part into his score, in the sense that (providing he get past his initial fears) he could easily strategise and find a handful of allies to keep himself protected for a time. Another benefit is that if he's truly trapped, he tends to get fairly feral. Perhaps not to the extent that he could be truly lethal, but enough to get himself out of the bind. Thusly, I believe that he would be scored around a five.
